Platforms, competition and innovation

The case of MobilePay and its competitors

Michael S. Dahl · English · 8 pages · Updated 8 October 2026

How did MobilePay become widely adopted in Denmark, and how did competing banks, retailers, and technology platforms respond? This teaching case explores network effects, platform competition, innovation, and the payment ecosystem through MobilePay’s rivalry with Swipp, mobile Dankort, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

The main case describes the market in September 2019. An epilogue follows developments through October 2026, including the Vipps–MobilePay merger, access to the iPhone’s NFC chip, and European payment cooperation. Six discussion questions support classroom use.
